New Special Care Nursery – world’s best practice

The Mater Hospital North Sydney‘s new North West Extensions was officially opened by Dame Marie Bashir on Monday 1st June 2015. The new wing provides facilities which transforms the Mater into one of the best equipped and most advanced private hospitals in Australia.
The new Extensions features a dedicated Special Care Nursery with 16 individual patient rooms for premature and low birth-weight babies requiring special care and monitoring. The new Special Care Nursery is based on international, best practice design and equipped with the latest technology.
In expressing his gratitude to donors for their vision and generosity, Friends of The Mater Foundation Chairman, and senior Obstetrician, Dr Keith Hartman, notes “The best features of leading facilities throughout the world were combined to produce the new Poche Van Norton Special Care Nursery. Funded by the Foundation, the new nursery will enable the provision of the highest level of care for babies delivered at the Mater.”
In addition, there are 16 additional, orthopaedic and rehabilitation private rooms, as well as 2 new Operating Rooms, 10 additional, first stage Recovery Beds and 6 additional Intensive Care Unit beds. The new operating rooms feature the most sophisticated surgical robotics system in Australia, as well as a Cardiovascular Hybrid Theatre.
