Bookings Update – July 29
We are temporarily suspending antenatal class bookings due to the ongoing Covid-19 situation in Greater Sydney. We hope to provide an update or re-open bookings towards the end of August pending NSW Health directions. We apologise for any inconvenience.
Mater Maternity provides a number of Antenatal classes for our expecting families, preparing them for labour, natural birth, caesarean birth and early parenting. It is aimed at first time parents. We recommend you attend your antenatal class when you are at 30 weeks, however we will only be scheduling classes two months in advance, so please check this page again at a later date for the months to follow.
Please note: our classes are available to Mater maternity patients only.
Antenatal Childbirth & Parenting Program
The Mater Antenatal class prepares expecting parents for labour, birth and caring for their newborn. The class educators are all experienced midwives here at the Mater, who will take you through stages of labour, pain strategies, caesarean section, tests and routines while at the hospital, newborn patterns of behaviour, transition to parenting and more.
There are two options available for these courses, depending on your preference:
- One-Day intensive class on Saturdays, from 8:30am – 5:30pm
- Two-Day class on consecutive Saturdays, from 9am – 3pm
Birth Beat Online Antenatal Education Available
Birth Beat was developed by Registered Nurse and Midwife Edwina Sharrock who has over 14 years of experience as a midwife and neonatal intensive care nurse. The digital course is led by Edwina and provides practical, evidence-based information to help you prepare for labour, birth and early parenthood. Your access to the Birth Beat Antenatal Program provides you with video content that’s available for 12 months.
The full course is available for $347 for Mater patients (the course normally retails for $397). If you have private health care, your fund may provide a full or partial rebate on the cost of the childbirth education course (depending on your fund and level of cover).
Antenatal Caesarean Birth & Parenting Program
The Mater Antenatal class prepares expecting parents for caesarean birth as well as early parenting. The class educators are all experienced midwives here at the Mater, who will take you through preparation for caesarean birth, what to expect in theatre, what happens in the first 24 hours after caesarean birth, tests and routines while at the hospital, newborn patterns of behaviour, transition to parenting and more.
