New dedicated Obstetric Theatre
Tuesday 26 March, 2019
Today we opened a new dedicated obstetric operating theatre located adjacent to the delivery suite – which in many respects provides us with the final component in offering a fully integrated Maternity service.
Although the majority of women tend to have an uncomplicated and natural birth, a number of mothers encounter problems requiring a caesarean section. The new Pagent Family Obstetric Operating Theatre will provide an added level of safety for mothers and babies who require urgent caesarean section or other lifesaving procedures.
A dedicated obstetric theatre is rare in Australian private hospitals. The close proximity and dedicated use for obstetric cases will result in less delay in urgent cases – we are very fortunate to be the beneficiaries of the Pagent family’s generosity and support of The Friends of the Mater Foundation.
The new facility also complements the state-of-the-art Poche Van Norton Special Care Nursery – also made possible by the generosity of The Friends of the Mater Foundation, many of whom have been touched first-hand by the care at the Mater. This facility has the capacity to care for premature babies born up to two months early and also other babies requiring specialised support. It is staffed by caring special care nurses and an on-site paediatrician and located adjacent to the delivery suite.
